Heart Disease Stroke and Obesity

Obesity is defined as having too much body fat. The body is composed of water, fat, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. When there is too much fat, you risk higher for health problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.


When you are obese, you magnify your risk for heart disease. When there is excess body fat increases cholesterol levels and triglycerides you. This increases your blood pressure and may cause diabetes. In some cases for diabetics, they have a two-fold risk for heart attack or stroke is great.

Obesity is caused by consuming more calories than burned with physical activity, both from daily activities or sports. When there are a lot of calories consumed, with too much saturated fat and cholesterol, cholesterol levels in the blood increase. This increases the risk for heart disease.

Specify If You Are Obese:

Body fat is measured by waist circumference and body mass index. Waistline is high risk if more than 35 inches for women and 40 inches more than men.

Body mass index assessing weight compared to height. This is a method for measuring body composition in relation to body fat. This is calculated by taking your weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared then multiplied by 703.

The National Center for Health Statistics has the following rates for the calculation of body mass index:

18.5 are considered less severe.

18.5-24.9 is considered healthy.

25.0 to 29.9 are considered overweight. This is generally 10% above the ideal body weight.

30.0 Or greater is considered obese.

Extreme obesity is defined as a body mass index of 40 or greater.

Here are some suggestions to reduce or prevent obesity:

1. Add physical activity to your daily routine. *dults must have at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity three or four times a week. Children must have at least 60 minutes in the same amount each week.

2. Reduce the time watching television or inactive activities including time on the computer or playing video games.

3. Create opportunities for physical activity at work and at home.

4. Promote healthy food choices that serve five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

5. Reduce the portion of food consumed. Avoid certain foods and do not eat with bigger portions.

Taking steps to avoid or reduce the likelihood of obesity has many benefits for everyone. The fact of living a healthier is an incentive to work on the problem of weight gain that leads to heart disease and other health related problems. Americans have the highest rates in the world for heart disease based on the number of people who are overweight.
